Antonio Guterres, a Portuguese on the move

Article Abstract:

Portuguese prime minister, Antonio Guterres, has been re-elected in 1999 and is a popular leader and center-left moderniser. He is one of a number of European politicians on the political left who has moved toward the right, and was a pioneer in this move. He has sought to improve relations with Spain, and has good relations with the US and United Kingdom. He has also sought to take a European perspective, and has taken Portugal into European monetary union.
