Answered prayers: religion benefits from new policy of tolerance

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's ruling Communist Party is allowing greater religious freedom and is trying to improve relations with the three major Vietnamese religions, which are Buddhism, Roman Catholicism and the Cao Dai movement. After taking control of the whole country in 1975, the communists curtailed these religious organizations so that they would not threaten the party's rule. However, since 1986 the communists, intent on creating a freer economic and political order, have granted all three groups varying degrees of liberty over such matters as the education of clergy.

Help wanted: Singapore scans the globe for skilled professionals

Article Abstract:

Singapore is facing chronic shortages of skilled workers, particularly scientists and engineers, and its government assists business in aggressively recruiting professionals from other nations. The Economic Development Board places advertisements and sponsors recruitment missions for private industry. It also schedules interviews and arranges work permits, all at no cost to corporations. One in five jobs in Singapore are filled by foreigners, but many foreigners may be daunted by high housing costs and different customs in Singapore.

Article Abstract:

The China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park is a joint-venture between China and Singaporean partners near the Chinese city of Suzhou. The park is being developed by Singaporean managers and seeks to attract Singapore companies to set up operations by guaranteeing amenities not usually found in China like high-quality infrastructure and efficient management. Singaporean companies are building six industrial zones in Asia including the one near Suzhou.
