ATT's voice recognition computers are replacing up to a third of the long-distance telephone company's 18,000 human operators. The computers not only listen, they also respond and route customers who carefully use five simple phrases. Voice recognition technology is also discussed.

A group of manufacturers lead by Intel have developed low-cost super computers through massively parallel processing (MPP). Cray Research currently has 2!3 of the super computer market, but it is restructuring and changing objectives to maintain competitiveness.

ATT's ambitious plan to ensure labor peace with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and other unions is taking longer to implement than the company had hoped. Its 'business-unit planning councils' are being resisted both the CWA and many local managers.
