The US insurance industry have been faced with declining profits for a number of years, and Hurricane Andrew has made the situation worse. A American International Group memo suggesting the disaster may be a good opportunity to raise rates was leaked, causing a public uproar.

Lloyd's of London has suffered huge losses the last few years, and optimistic reports that the situation would improve with the 1990 report, to be announced in Jun 1993, are unfounded. It is likely that the market will have lost well over the $3.3 billion it lost in 1989.
