An elephantine problem

Article Abstract:

Trade in ivory is a contentious issue, with some African countries where elephant populations are rising seeking a resumption of the trade. Others object and fear an increase in poaching. Monitoring should be improved and rich countries could purchase ivory prior to the lifting of a ban, giving funds to poorer countries.

A debate on trade in ivory and other parts of endangered species such as tortoiseshells, has taken place in Kenya where the convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) has met. Debate is discussed in some detail.

Methods of controlling large elephant populations in southern Africa include restricting access to boreholes which also reduces iodine in elephants' diets so makes them likely to delay breeding.
