Ambiguities of urban design

Article Abstract:

Urban design is used to describe the wide range of differing elements which go into the creation and management of the spatial aspects of an urban area. The concept of urban design covers a wide variety of activities therefore a clear definition can be difficult to establish. Some observers suggest that urban design only applies to the spatial dimension of design whilst others point out that changes to urban space are caused by social factors. Urban designers include professionals from a variety of areas of expertise who use verbal and visual methods of communicating their ideas.

Issues concerning the problems of urban development at the beginning og the twenty first century are discussed. Particular attention is given to assessing urban sprawl phenomena and to identifying which areas are beneficial and detrimental.
