The Algerian government could do much to end the fighting between Islamic terrorists and state-supported vigilantes that has killed tens of thousands of Algerians since the army took power in 1992 if it stopped treating the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) and the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) alike.

A military takeover in Algeria has suspended elections which the fundamentalist party, Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), was about to win. Algerian political parties, who had feared control by the FIS, now condemn the coup, and are discussing plans with the fundamentalists.

The Islamic Salvation Front(FIS) claimed responsibility for the attempted assassination of Khaled Nezzar, who is a key official in the High Council of State. The FIS may be attempting to gather the fundamentalist movement into a single body.
