Continuing its trend, Ahold N.V. (Koninklijke N.V.) of the Netherlands has purchased another supermarket chain in the United States. Pathmark Stores Inc., based in New Jersey, was acquired for $250 million. The buy will add an additional 132 supermarkets to the 1,000 presently controlled by Ahold in the U.S. Pathmark was acquired in part to increase the company's presence on the East Coast. Ahold's profits for 1998 wre $600 million.
