Africa's forgotten war

Article Abstract:

War between Ethiopia and Eritrea was sparked off by a border clash in May 1998. The war was unexpected, and the governments of the two countries contained people who had previously been allies as fellow rebels. There are estimates of 50,000 dead, and many thousands of people have been displaced and could starve. A US-Rwandan peace delegation almost secured an agreement in 1998, but failed to secure final consent from Eritrea. The Organization of African Unity and the United Nations have also sought to prmote a peace agreement.
