Article Abstract:

Xerox Technology Ventures was set up to tackle the problem of overlooked innovations. Researchers from the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) were able to take ideas to the new business unit on condition they stayed at PARC until a working model of their scheme had been set up. Founders could obtain a stake of 20% in their ventures. Over a dozen new firms have been set up in a ten-year period. Lucent Technologies uses a similar approach to innovations.

What a way to make a living

Article Abstract:

British manufacturing accounts for more than three-fifths of the UK's export revenues, and productivity rose by nearly 5% a year during the past decade. But much of the productivity gains of the 1980's can be attributed to workforce reductions.
