Across the abyss

Article Abstract:

Methods of dating rocks and artefacts have improved so that it is easier to understand the history of the earth and humankind. The Phaistos Disc dates from some 1700 BC and is an example of a cultural discontinuity. Time capsules have been buried which may havelittle meaing to future generations with no shared culture. A clock that can function for 10,000 years has been suggested by Danny Hillis, a computer scientist, as a way of focusing attention away from the change to 2000, and toward a deeper understanding of time.

Simulators of the lost ark

Article Abstract:

A British team of archaeologists is studying an ancient site at Kerkenes Dag in Turkey by means of a hot-air balloon. Photographs and computer simulations are being used in the non-invasive archaeological project aimed at reconstructing a fifth-century Byzantine wall.
