Acoustics are difficult

Article Abstract:

The results of acoustic design remain unpredictable, despite all the benefits of science and computing. Concert halls are the ultimate test of acoustic design, and when the Royal Festival Hall was downsized to save money, artificial reverberation had to be added later. 10 years later the acoustic design of the New York Lincoln Center auditorium failed. Richard Cowell, director of Arup Acoustics, favours computer analysis and simulation, and most major consultants rely on computer modelling. However David Binns of Sandy Brown Associates, believes that computer predictions need to be tempered by judgment and experience, until computing power and specialist software is better developed.
