Article Abstract:
Acer Inc. of Taipei, Taiwan, has reported a 60% drop in its net profit in the third quarter of 1998 to NT$ 225 million ($6.9 million) from NT$ 558 million in the same period in 1997. Part of the decline in Acer's profit had been attributed to its 50%-owned Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing Inc., which posted a loss of NT$ 1.6 billion, as a result of the depressed prices of memory chips worldwide. Despite Acer's poor performance in the third quarter, company Vice President Philip Peng reported that its net profit forecast of NT$ 3.5 billion for the year will remain unchanged because of Acer's optimism that its semiconductor unit will perform better and an increase in operating profit in the fourth quarter of 1998 is expected as a result of a recent improvement in memory-chip prices.
