Abbey anniversary

Article Abstract:

English Heritage has decided to mark the 1,400th anniversary of St Augustine's abbey near Canterbury, England, with the construction of an Abbey Museum which will also serve as a gatehouse. The design, produced by van Heyningen and Haward, fills a gap in the red brick wall surrounding the site. The rebuilt part of the wall has been designed as a permanent entity, while the museum building can be removed fairly easily if it outlives its usefulness. It has its own raft foundation, and has blockwork walls.
