In year 2000 the number of internet users in Austria rose by 49% to 2.7mn people. 40% of Austrians over 14 years of age use the internet. 46% of the total population, i.e. 3.1mn people, have access to the internet. According to Austrian Internet Monitor by the market research institutes Fessel-GfK and Integral, 31% of internet users surf on the net several times a week. In the age group 14-19 years 85% use the internet, while among people over 60, the rate is 4%. One out of two men and one out of three women use the internet.

According to the Business 21 survey by OGM (Osterreichische Gesellschaft fur Marketing), turnover from electronic commerce is to grow in Austria to Sch 28bn by 2005, compared with only Sch 250mn in 1999. OGM interviewed 100 experts. In five years, 44% of software, 30% of financial services and 25% of media and hardware will be sold via Internet, according to the survey. Internet portals will gain importance especially to small and medium-sized businesses.
