In year 2000 the share of cars made in Japan of overall car sales in Austria amounted to 12.35%. Including cars made by Japanese manufacturers at European plants, the share is 12.85%. In 1988, Japanese producers had held 33.14% of the Austrian car market. Japanese producers' loss of market share is explained with a number of factors. Firstly, Japanese producers have lost ground to Skoda and South Korean makes. The high rate of the yen has undermined the price advantage of Japanese cars. Moreover, Japanese manufacturers were slow to react to the keen demand for diesel cars in Austria. In the case of Daihatsu, the model range biased towards compact cars does not fit with Austrians' needs. At Mitsubishi, Austrian car buyers' reserve is explained largely with the outdated model range.

In Austria, the marketing companies of Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler still operate as separate firms. Chrysler Austria belongs to the DaimlerChrysler group while the Pappas family holds 50% of the Austrian Mercedes-Benz company. In 1999, Mercedes-Benz increased turnover by 6.1% to Sch 13.2bn. The company was successful especially with vans, while sales of passenger cars fell from 12,288 to 12,014 units. Sales of Chrysler Jeeps and passenger cars fell from 4,900 to 4,648 units but turnover remained at the level of the previous year, at Sch 2bn.

Austrian-based Eybl International is to provide the US-based systems supplier Lear Corporation Ltd with leather seat covers for the British luxury car make Jaguar. The order has a total volume of Sch 1.7bn in the next three years. With the order, Eybl hopes to increase the turnover of the automotive components division by 14% in 2001. Eybl produces leather covers in Deta, Romania.
