AUSTRIA: FIGURES ON SMOKERS

Article Abstract:

According to a poll among 500 Austrians, 38% of Austrians smoke. The rate among men is 41% and among women 35%. In the different age groups, the rate is the highest among 16-29-year-olds, at 54%. 53% of smokers smoke 10 cigarettes or less per day.

It is estimated that 10-12% of Austrians are addicted to tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceuticals or drugs. About 18% of Austrian adults abuse alcohol. In the 16-19 age group the share is 6%. 5% of adult Austrians are addicted to alcohol.

It is estimated that 29% of Austrians drink alcohol in amounts that are damaging. About 5% of Austrians over 16 years of age suffer from alcoholism.
