A number of companies from the computer sector in Austria have joined forces to combat the lack of skilled programmers. At the Solution Developer Academy initiated by Microsoft, school-leavers and graduates with a basic knowledge of a programming language are offered three-week courses to become certified software developers. Those who have successfully completed the course can apply for jobs at the companies backing the project, which include also Artaker, Braintrust, Brainwave, Data Systems Austria, Fabasoft, Happynet, Mii, Softwarehaus Zochling and Tecit.

In addition to board games, the game library Spielebox in Vienna, Austria offers more and more computer games for borrowing. Spielebox wants to inform parents about the games their children are playing. At the end of June 2000, Spielebox is to publish a recommendation list of computer games and learning software. The leaflet includes age recommendations and information on game categories, producers and required hardware. Parents can also come to Spielebox for advice. Spielebox is also organising seminars for parents who want to learn to use the computer.

ACP (All Computer Products), which was set up in 1993, aims to become Austria's leading computer systems house, overtaking DaimlerChrysler Services and GE Capital IT Solutions. In year 2000 ACP expects a turnover of more than Sch 2bn, up from Sch 1.6bn in 1999. ACP is to set up 9 new branches in Austria in addition to the 12 existing ones. After that the company is to enter the German market. ACP, which offers the full range of information technology services and solutions, is entering the data network market, including internet.
