The Austrian printed board producer Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik (AT & S) is to make 1-2 acquisitions by the end of year 2000. The company, which due to booming demand is faced with a shortage of capacity, is eyeing especially the US market. Additional production might be set up also in China, South Korea or Taiwan. As soon as the production plant in Nanjangud, India, has reached satisfactory productivity levels, a second factory will be built next to it. AT & S is aiming to increase turnover by 40% per year. In the financial year to 30 April 2000, however, sales are likely to rise from EUR 167mn to merely EUR 220mn. AT & S will be supplying 40% of circuit boards required for Siemens' portable phones in Europe in the next three years. The contract is worth about Sch 3bn. Another contract from Ericsson involves the delivery of circuit boards worth Sch 125mn for base stations.

The Austrian Unterpremstatten-based semiconductor manufacturer Austria Mikro Systeme (AMS) has secured financing for a new chip factory in Unterpremstatten. Public subsidies account for 11% of the EUR 205mn investment. Construction of the facility is to start in the second quarter of 2000, and series production is to begin two years later. The plant will produce high-performance computer chips and electronic components mainly for the automotive and communication industries. AMS will be a preferred supplier of Siemens. The number of staff at Unterpremstatten will rise from 680 to up to 830. In the medium term AMS expects a 50% increase in both profits and sales, which should reach EUR 130mn. The company expects its growth rate to follow that of the world semiconductor market, which it predicts to grow 20% in 2000 and 16% in 2001.
