ABN posts higher net, shifts strategy for Italian bank stake

ABN AMRO Holding N.V. of the Netherlands posted an 11 percent surge in net profit for the second-quarter, but is forecasting slower growth for the rest of the year. After the failed bid for Banca Antonveneta S.p.A., Chief Executive Officer Rijkman Groenink has indicated that the Netherlands bank will continue to persue European Union cross-border acquisitions.

Germany's Sachsen LB, a state-owned bank, became the nation's second bank to need assistance in the wake of problems in the credit market. A consortium of banks has provided Sachsen with a bail-out.
