A wiser, weaker state

Article Abstract:

The French state is interventionist, and the highly regulated French economy is still prosperous. There is high unemployment, but labor productivity is high. The government carries out some essential tasks such as educating and planning, but there is also waste. The state performs its tasks well, but the cost is high. The public transportation system is efficient, and parents trust state schools, but there are too many state employees. The state is starting to privatize, and there has been some improvement in labor flexibility.
