Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has ruled that foreign sales corporations function as illegal subsidies for US-based firms, a move which has led to further criticism of the WTO, already under fire in the US from environmentalists, labor unions and Republican unilateralists. There could also be increased friction between Europe and the US over the ruling. The US may challenge European Union rules on value-added tax, or refuse to comply with the WTO ruling. The dispute could damage the WTO.

Article Abstract:
There is a dispute between the European Union (EU) and the US on the best method for protecting personal data. This is an issue that concerns consumers, who could also benefit from being sent more targeted marketing material. There is concern that a trade war could arise and that a provision preventing the export of data from the EU to countries with weaker protection laws could be enforced. A compromise could be achieved between the two sides with no need for new legislation in the US.
