China's economic reforms have resulted in severe differences in annual incomes between urbanites and the peasantry. Per capita earnings in the eastern cities are well over four times the rural average of 700 yuan. Shenzhen has the highest income, 4,205 yuan per person.

China's economy keeps growing as the government increases the number of areas allowed capitalist enterprises. Foreign investors are waiting for a chance to get involved. Only a political backlash if the economy overheats can prevent long term growth.
