Influential Palestinians now believe that internal Israeli political considerations are driving official Israeli policy on Palestinian autonomy, much to the detriment of the cause of peace. The ruling Labour Party wants to rebut Likud's charge that it is soft on terrorism prior to the May 1996 elections.

The Labour Party of Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres deserves to win the 1996 general election. If Likud should win, it may damage the peace process between Israel, the Palestinians, and the Arab countries. Unlike Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, Peres understands that peace brings security.

Rabin should should show more restraint in dealing with Palestinian extremists, and more boldness in diplomacy. Any attention given to extremists helps them disrupt the peace process. Negotiating with the PLO would be a positive move that many help calm the occupied territories.
