A log in the wind: hurricanes

Article Abstract:

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, FL plans to use its new Gulfstream IV jet in its hurricane research. The jet will be useful in collecting data from the air layer 12.5 km above the earth, which is believed to make significant contributions to storm behavior. The jet will be equipped with 'dropwindsondes,' disposable monitoring and measuring devices that will be released from the plane every 30 km to measure meteorologic parameters. The data from the dropwindsondes will be entered into computer models, which will help scientists predict the behavior of the storm. Earlier, more accurate predictions may help reduce the amount of damage a storm causes.

Eye on the storm

Article Abstract:

Forecasting hurricanes is important in the US, where they have caused considerable damage. People want to know how strong hurricanes are, and if they are approaching. The direction of hurricanes is easier to forecast than their strength, which can change suddenly. Risk Management Solutions is one company working on the problem using computer models. Florida State University's James Elsner has studied storms since 1900, and sees two stable patterns for hurricanes.
