The heads of a personal computer's hard disk drive largely determines the amount of data storage. Advances in hard disk technology have led to smaller dimensions of disks. Milpitas, CA-based Read-Rite Corp is the top independent head supplier in the sector and has emerged as an expert in manufacturing heads out of thin films. Even Japanese firms have not prominentlyfigured in the material-processing and miniaturization market. Developments in optical storage and flash memory, however, could significantly affect the future of the disk drive market.

Novo Nordisk Bioindustrials Inc is the world's largest producer of industrial-enzymes. The company has identified and used these naturally occurring chemical catalysts for a variety of functions. They are used for fabric-finishing in the textile industry, resin-removal, bleaching in the paper-making industry and in the manufacture of detergents. Novo's scientists are using the latest techniques in genetic engineering to extract enzymes in large quantities.

The manufacture and use of digital cordless telephone technology is growing in Asia. Japanese companies are developing a personal handy phone to allow both sending and receiving calls. Cordless phones have a wide market because they only cost about $100. The Japanese await licensing for operator services, but China, Singapore, Thailand and Australia already have such services.
