A fly in the ointment: Florida agriculture

Article Abstract:

The worst infestation of Mediterranean fruit flies in Florida since the early 1960s struck the fruit and vegetable industry in summer 1997. After complaints from residents, bombardiers will cease bombing the flies with the pesticide Malathion and instead bombard the region with 300 million sterile male Mediterranean flies every week. The plan, which was successful in California, should result in the eradication of the flies in Florida.
