Article Abstract:

Elections for governor in Japan's Saitama prefecture took an odd twist when popular socialist incumbent Yawara Hata announced he was stepping down. The ruling party had previously persuaded Yoshihiko Tsuchiya, a distinguished Diet member, to run for the office. Then Hata got back in the race. Tsuchiya called off his candidacy. Hata was then implicated in a corruption scheme.

Getting redder: Japan

Article Abstract:

Scandal and corruption in Japan has prompted voters to elect numerous Communists recently. The Mayor of Komae City, who resigned after a gambling debt scandal, was replaced by a Communist, and Communist representation in the upper Diet increase by 9.5% in 1995.
