A debate has arisen as to whether plastic or cork is the best material for wine stoppers. There has been an improvement in the methods of cork production as a result of the debate. Badly treated cork can lead to contamination of wine. Plastic is likely to take an increasing share of the market, simply because the demand for wine stoppers is greater than the cork industry can deal with. The premium end of the wine market may be unaffected, but most wine is drunk the year it is produced, and there are no concerns about the possible long-term effects of plastic on quality with such rapid consumption.

The Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate are two journals that rate wines, and their influence is importantin terms of wine sales. There is concern that this process may be seen as more scientific than it is, and that wine is being produced to rate highly, while more subtle wines may be losing their character. Some wineries welcome the ratings system, though some Bordeaux chateaux will not take part in tastings, and Burgundy is one wine producing region that opposes the Advocate's rating system.
