A blast from Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

Zimbabwe has been under one-party rule since 1980, with Robert Mugabe as leader, but the rejection of a draft constitution allowing greater power for the government and Mugabe. There is concern about high inflation, fuel shortages, and mismanagement that has led to aid suspension. Mugabe should be praised for accepting defeat and should take this opportunity to leave. It is unusual for dissidents to win in Africa. Mugabe not clamp down but should show that he understands the need for tolerant rulers and free institutions.

The pressure builds

Article Abstract:

Zimbabwe's Pres Robert Mugabe has come under criticism from international summit meetings over the lack of democracy and the government-sponsored political violence in Zimbabwe. However, Mugabe looks unlikely to give in to international demands for economic reforms and fair land redistribution.
