Manchester Airport has embarked on a 60 million pounds sterling development project that includes a futuristic building, Metrolink facilities, bus and coach station, a 7,400 office development and expansion of heavy rail facilities. The interchange will provide travellers arriving at the airport by bus, coach or train with a remote check-in facility from where they can walk to the main terminal buildings. Manchester Airport has hired Mott MacDonald as its lead consultant, to be responsible for all civil, structural, geotechnical and transportatio aspects.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is conducting the quinquennial review of the four UK airports as provided by the Airports Act 1986. The four airports include London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted and Manchester. The CAA has identified some major issues which it proposes to address in its review. The agency is planning to refer the airports to the Competition Commission in Dec 2001 to set new conditions for airport charges for the five years from Apr 2003.

Bombardier Aerospace will spend $47.4 million to expand and develop its Belfast City Airport. Once the plan is approved, the company expects to complete the project within 12 to 14 months. The project will build a new passenger terminal, an apron for 10 aircraft and new car parks. The number of people passing through the airport has increased from 85,000 in 1983 to 1.36 million a year.
