Article Abstract:

The EU's rules on working hours, which require that workers put in no more than 48 hours a week, could worsen unemployment in Europe. Regulatory obstacles to hiring are already a cause of unemployment. The EU or any national governing body should not make policy on working hours.

Laying hands on labour law

Article Abstract:

There are several competing proposals for a labor policy for the European single market. The social protocol of the Maastricht Treaty would allow the European Commission to propose labor laws and give industry and labor leaders a chance to come up with their own agreements.

Article Abstract:

The European Community has proposed the closure of steel mills, in order to cut capacity and boost falling prices that are causing mounting losses. In order for the measure to be effective, state mills must be closed and subsidies reduced.
