Article Abstract:
As part of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership agreement, the BEI, the European investment bank, has granted an ECU 45mn loan to Tunisia. The loan, given to the STEG, the Tunisian electricity and gas company, will be used for the reinforcement of the electricity transmission and distribution networks in Tunisia. Diverse sub-projects concerning transmission and distribution will be carried out between 1998 and 2001 in order to improve electricity supply, and respond to a growing demand.

SEEG, the Gabon based water and energy company, realises 80% of its turnover through water distribution, supplying 52,000 users. Electricity accounts for a smaller percentage of its turnover, due to the fact that only 50% of the population of Gabon is equipped with an electricity supply. The company wishes to improve the quality of its service, and with this in mind will carry out a survey amongst its clients, before commencing a CFA Fr 300bn investment project.

In order to alleviate the economic crisis afflicting Gabon, the president announced that the sectors of agro-industry and food produced in Gabon will be exempt from the value-added tax (VAT). The same is true for raw materials used in the production of food products and certain basic products. Milk, yogurt, margarine, butter, bread, yeast, rice, flour, and newsprint are already exempt from the VAT.
