40% FALL SEEN IN POTATO OUTPUT IN HASSAN THIS YEAR

Article Abstract:

Hassan district in Karnataka is expected to record 35-40 percent fall in its potato crop in 1998. The fall is anticipated due to the decrease in the area under the crop and the delayed monsoon. During the current crop season, Hassan district is expected to produce just 1 lakh tonnes of potato (more than 3 lakh tonnes in the previous season). Low prices and marketing problems have resulted in a fall of 35-40 percent in the area under potato cultivation. Hassan district usually grows potato on about 30,000 hectares. (ag)
