The company has maintained a presence in mainland Europe since the early 1980s.

Regional newspaper firm, United News and Media was bought by Candover for 360 million pounds sterling in February 1998, and has now been renamed Regional Independent Media Group (RIM). The buyout was funded with Candover's 1997 fund, which was targeted at buyouts of over 100 million pounds. RIM publishes a total of 44 titles, including the 'Yorkshire Evening Post' and the 'Yorkshire Post'. In 1997, the company reported turnover of 140 million pounds sterling.
