21 - day chase lasts 7400 km!

Article Abstract:

The Uruguayan-registered toothfish long liner Viarsa was arrested with 40 man crew about 3500 km south-west of Cape of Good Hope, after 21-day, 7400 km chase on charges of poaching Patagonian toothfish. Dorada, Falkland Island based fisheries patrol ship, South African tug John Ross also participated in the chase. The vessel was carrying 85 tonnes of toothfish worth A$1.5 million on the international market. This conveys a message to toothfish pirates that governments have declared a war on toothfish piracy.

Peru legalizes pirate seiners

Article Abstract:

Peruvian government has started an amnesty scheme where under the vessels resorting to illegal fishing are given time until October to install satellite tracking systems. Though the overall catch will remain the same as a result of the initiative, there will be positive effects on the original fleets outputs.
