Article Abstract:
According to the manufacturer Aker Brattvaag, up to 20m fishing vessels can be fitted with fuel saving AC electric winches, which save oil, pipe work and valves, fuel consumption. Different vessels like triple-rigger Vesttind, pelagic trawler Centurion del Atlantico and many other ships are fitted with these winches, which are silent in operation and are always ready and need no pumps to start them.

Mechanism and design of two giant electronically-operated arms used for mussel dredging aboard Irish fishing vessel Edenvale are described. The automated mussel dredging system is developed by Scheepswerf Gebr. Kooiman, a Netherlands based shipyard.

The winches from Spain based Technicas Hidraulicas, S.A. were fit in a seiner for Dutch owner Jaczon. The seiner was built at the Ching Fu Shipyard in Taiwan. A brief description of the winches is presented.
