Article Abstract:
China once again rattled international confidence in post-1997 Hong Kong and squandered an opportunity to build goodwill when its officials initially forbade a religious gathering that should not need their permission. Chinese leaders have repeatedly insisted that nothing will change after China takes control of Hong Kong, but its bureaucrats still encourage a belief that their permission is needed for events that do not now need govt permission. Unless humility is instilled promptly, more such incidents will follow.

China and Taiwan must recognize pragmatic realities and agree that mainland China will eventually be reunified with the island, but not until both are ready. China, and therefore all other global powers, will refuse Taiwanese independence, and even a UN seat is not feasible without Beijing's nod. China must recognize the drawbacks of forcing the issue, and be patient while developing their relationship. China should forego the use of force while Taiwan agrees not to seek independence, making even a UN seat possible.

Article Abstract:
There are suggestions that Beijing is co-opting the business community in Taiwan, and isolating the government. However the government in Taiwan is resisting the increasing pressure from the business community, although China is pushing Taiwan to hold political discussions aimed at the reunification of Taiwan and the mainland. There is support for talks with Beijing in Taiwan, and even the Democratic Progressive Party is willing to take part.
