Article Abstract:
The 1996 conference will seek to solve problems that divide Europe. Such notions as the nation-state ideal of France and Britain vs supranational union ideas of Germany and others, is just one difference. Problems facing the monetary and politics union of Europe are briefly discussed.

The cross-country comparisons give depressing statistics for the UK. Britain is the second most polluted country in the EC, also the oldest and least educated. Britons work longer, marry younger and divorce more than the average, but they do enjoy more purchasing power.

The European hotel industry is going through difficult times, as heavy investment in expansion was followed by a recession which deeply curtailed travel. The result has been more rooms and fewer guests, and debt that the hotel chains are laboring under.
