Zapata Corporation intends to buy 21 Internet sites and aggragate them under one site, www.Zap.com. The sites include search engine, Starting Point, and chat network, Chat Planet. Zapata is also interested in several electronic commerce sites, such as, Bibliofind, Mass Music and Virtual Technology. The company has already bought on-line magazines Word and Charged. Zapata wants to create a doorway service where users pass on their way to other sites. It hopes to be the No. 1 or No. 2 largest site on the Internet.

CMP Media Inc. has suspended the publication of Byte magazine and laid off 74 of the magazine's employees. CMP acquired Byte and three other magazines in May 1998. Byte's editors and writers were expecting CMP to revive the magazine. Byte has seen its circulation fall to an average of 442,553 compared to 522,795 in 1996. The magazine's advertising has also decreased. Byte published 61.5 ad pages. This was less than half of what it published in 1996.
