Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin ordered the elimination of state subsidies of most goods and services in the former Soviet republic effective Jan 2, 1992. The effect was that the prices of many things rose beyond the reach of the average worker.

The first session of the Russian Congress held after the collapse of the Soviet Union was begun on Apr 6, 1992. The Congress was opposed to Pres Yeltsin's economic reforms, and Yeltsin responded by making changes in the cabinet.
