Nortel's rivals seek the firm's gigabit crown

The race for increased capacity on the Internet is on. Telecommunications equipment companies like Nortel Networks and Lucent technologies are fighting for market share in the area of gigabits. Since Nortel is the leader thus far, others are jumping at the opportunity to win market control. Nortel sold $4.95 billion worth of fiber optic-transmission systems in 1999.

The battle for market share among the top firms is growing more intense. Nokia Corp. pursues expansion, Motorola Inc. seeks to balance profitability with growth, while Telefon AB L.M. Ericcson is having difficulty remaining in the handset business. Shares lost value on news of disappointing earnings and forecasts. Investors are concerned, as new technologies such as Wireless Application Protocol, Global Packet Radio Service and so-called third-generation networks and phones have yet to live up to their advance billing.
