Using production and transfer batches in flowshops under MRP control

Article Abstract:

Simulation experiments based on a flow shop manufacturing and assembly setting model were conducted to determine the effect of material flow control and order release throttling on shop flow effectiveness in Material Requirements Planning-based environments. Results demonstrate that inventory and service levels may vary as a result of an increase in material flow frequency. They also suggest that a threshold exists for throttling and staggering work order releases when these processes result in a decline in service levels.

The effects of lot sizing and dispatching on customer service in an MRP environment

Article Abstract:

The impact of lot sizing on order processing techniques in a hypothetical factory operated under material requirements planning policies is investigated. The interaction of lot-sizing and dispatch techniques is compared on the basis of tardiness of customer orders and with variable constraints imposed by technique, demand and nervousness. Bottlenecks that result from the lack of dedicated equipment are observed and analyzed.

Optimal and heuristic policies for lot sizing with learning in setups

Article Abstract:

The heuristic policies CURS (current setup cost lot sizing policy) and MINS (minimum setup cost lot sizing policy) can be used to determine optimal lot sizes in situations where data on setup cost reduction trends are not available. CURS is recommended for highly automated environments where there is slow improvements in setup costs.
