The promotional roles of state government and Japanese manufacturing direct investment in the United States

Article Abstract:

A statistical analysis of the factors influencing Japanese companies to locate in the US indicates that the export promotional activities of US states attract Japanese investments more effectively than do activities and offices designed for that purpose. Japanese investment in the US has skyrocketed from $20 billion in 1985 to $70 billion in 1990. According to the study, the variables that have positively affected the decisions of these Japanese companies to locate in a particular state include: the state budget for export promotion, the number of manufacturers in the state, and the unemployment rate.

Shareholder control and financial distress in the thrift industry

Article Abstract:

The dual roles maintained by the shareholder-manager of a savings and loan association often lead to conflicting objectives. Shareholder-managers are more willing to risk the assets of creditors while career managers are more reluctant to do the same. An examination of savings and loan associations reveal that thrift ownership structure is related to risk-taking behavior. It is suggested that ownership structures of thrifts be revised to provide early warning systems of financial distress similar to those of commercial banks.
