Article Abstract:
The control and management of construction project costs by a company controller can be accomplished by following specific accounting techniques. A controller should manage costs in the following areas: accounting controls, analysis of payment requests, credit alternatives, change orders, payroll benefits, equipment purchased and rented, and lump-sum versus cost plus contracts. The ability to analyze costs of a complex, large dollar value project by a controller can help companies cut costs. The money required to manage a project and provide additional financial analysis is small in comparison to the dollar value of the savings that may result. Monitoring the finances of a construction project also has an immediate, quantifiable effect.

BF Goodrich Tire Group is among the companies that have begun to use work teams to create employee involvement in solving departmental problems. This form of participative management has as an objective the fostering of a sense of 'ownership' and care for the company among employees. One of the departments selected for this type of management experimentation was the Billing Department, which received full support from management to implement changes suggested by the work team. The main obstacles encountered were slowness in implementation and delays in realizing results. A review of the program reveals that despite obstacles, productivity did increase since the work teams were introduced.
