The Influence of Selected Variables on the Grading of Student-Written Letters

Article Abstract:

Student-written business letters were studied for grade reliability. For example, the same paper could receive an A from one teacher, and an E from another. Part of this variation may be explained by the type of institution; community college teachers assign higher grades than university instructors. This study found no significant effect of handwriting quality on grading.

Managers write internal memos more frequently than any other type of business communication. Memo writing requires some of the special skills used in letter writing, but is frequently ignored in practice and in university courses. A memo must inform, direct, and persuade.
