Article Abstract:
Successful research and technology institutes (RTIs) are not highly engaged in advanced research. Results of a major benchmarking study show that only a small group of successful RTIs undertake pioneering industrial research. Successful RTIs are found to engage in highly specialized technical tasks and services that are useful in the innovative activities of the industry. Such group of RTIs concentrate on innovation process' middle ground such as experimental development, process improvement and advanced engineering.

Article Abstract:
Nine of the most successful research and technology institutes (RTIs) in Europe, North America and East Asia were studied to determine the strategic needs of RTIs in adjusting to new user requirements and in adapting to an increasingly volatile financial and innovation environment. Results indicated that it is important for RTIs to determine the kind of business they are in and to have a clear understanding of the future requirements and opportunities for that particular type of business.
