South African government, African National Congress reach power-sharing deal

Article Abstract:

The South African government and the African National Congress on Feb 12, 1993, agreed on a transitional government in which both parties would govern jointly for five years. Under the agreement, white-minority rule would end by Apr 1994 with the election of a 400-seat assembly.

40 slain in S. Africa massacre; ANC breaks off talks

Article Abstract:

Armed marauders killed more than 40 blacks in the South African township of Boipatong on June 17, 1992. Many witnesses charged the police with complicity in the massacre. The ANC suspended constitutional talks with the government until the violence is curbed.

Nationwide strike cripples industry

Article Abstract:

Approximately four million black workers in South Africa went on strike on Aug 3-4, 1992, to convince the government to accept black majority rule. The South African Congress of Trade Unions organized the strike.
