SEC mulls formal look at exposure

The concern on Wall Street over the near-collapse of Long-Term Capital Management LP has prompted the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to consider launching an in-depth and formal investigation of the exposure of major brokerage firms to the hedge-fund business. Industry analysts have said that the SEC is being pressured by Congress to provide more extensive regulatory inspection operations for the hedge-fund market. There is concern among government regulators that other hedge-funds are on the verge of collapse.

Europe may ban 'light,' 'mild' on cigarettes

Article Abstract:

In Europe, cigarette companies are using ads that link low-tar cigarettes with colors and pictures in a move that anticipates new European Union legislation that would ban terms such as 'light,' 'mild' and 'low tar' from packages, as well as quadruple the number of health warnings on packs of cigarettes. Companies hope that their low-tar cigarette brands will be recognizable by their package color, even after the ban.
