Article Abstract:
The economic indicators of retail sales, low interest rates and inflation, and low unemployment are all postitive for the recreation industry in the 1st qtr of 1999, and the forecast is good for the industry, as well. Cruise lines are enlarging their fleets in response to the good sea vacation market and the mature baby boomer generation is willing and able to spend more on leisure activities. These stocks are timely in 1999 and several are expected to appreciate in value over the next three to five years.

Earnings for the recreation industry have increased during the first half of 1997, due in large part to new entities and the installation of information technology and sound management in established companies. The consolidation trend, especially among providers of leisure goods and services, has become a noticeable for investors, as well. However, investors must be aware of industry trends and shifts for successful selection of individual stocks.
